New Community Sports Foundation to be launched.......

logo

March 2010 will saw the launch of the new Community Sports Foundation, a new registered charity established to help bring the benefits of sport into everyone’s lives.

Its work will compliment and support the efforts of national and local government, Sport England the Youth Sports Trust and the national sports governing bodies in increasing sports participation across England. Government has set a headline target of getting 2 million more people across England more active by 2012, including an additional 1 million people actively involved in sport, as part of the legacy of the London Olympics. Other headline targets include:

  • Increase in the numbers of 5-16 year olds participating in at least 2 hours per week of high quality sport and PE (currently 86%)
  • All 5-16 year olds offered opportunities to participate in a further 3 hours per week of high quality sporting activity by 2017
  • All 16-19 year olds offered opportunities to participate in 3 hours per week of high quality sporting activity by 2017
  • A 25% reduction in the drop-out rate from sport post 16 years by 2012
  • Increased participation to 33% of all 5-16 year olds in NGB accredited sports clubs by 2010
  • 70% of population to be reasonably active (30 minutes moderate intensity physical activity on at least 5 days a week) by 2020
  • A reduction in the number of overweight and obese children to year 2000 levels by 2020

2012 Legacy
The Foundation aims to be a part of the sporting legacy of the 2012 Olympics and to help deliver the above targets. It believes in the power of sport to transform lives and to improve the wellbeing and quality of life of individuals and whole communities. It will therefore work in partnership with a wide range of other organisations to bring high quality sports coaching to communities right across London and the south east initially, rolling out across the rest of the country as resources develop. A unique feature of the Foundation’s work will be supporting hard pressed and disadvantaged groups and communities through the 20:12 grant scheme which will see the Foundation donate a total of 2,012 hours of free coaching to community groups and organisations leading up to the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games.  This will be in addition to the Foundation’s partnership funded delivery of sport.

Green Dimensions Director Phil Lomax is proud to be one of the Foundation’s Trustees.

The Foundation is a charitable company run by a board of Trustees, chaired by Huw Jennings, Director of Fulham FC’s academy and including Derek Wyatt MP, Chair of the Parliamentary Olympic 2012 group and Phil Lomax, Director of Green Dimensions. The Foundation is delighted to have the support of many sporting legends as its Ambassadors, including Sir Ian McGeechan, Dr. Tim Brabants MBE, Giles Long MBE, Kate Staple, Theo Walcott, Kit Symons, Jason Leonard OBE, Billy McKinlay and Cheryl Saunders Atkinson.
